Do you know why early Christians were called atheists?
  • Because they did not believe in the Roman Gods.

  • Because they believed in only one God. They were also called a cult of cannibals.

  • Where does it say that they were?

  • Because they didn't acknowledge/respect/worship the Roman gods.

  • Well because basically they deny real divine plurality which in antiquity was considered an essential feature of true theism i.e polytheism. In those days you were either a polytheist or an atheist.

  • Atheist equals 'a theist' I imagine.

  • Because they were not Jews?

  • They didn't believe in the Roman pantheon, and were ridiculed for not
    believing.

They defended themselves by pointing out that it was the Greeks and their philosophers who were the "true" atheists.

  • The start of misunderstanding.

  • Yes, they were the heretics of their day back then. The didn't believe in the same god concepts which were predominately polytheistic. Some Romans who felt their beliefs were entirely alien and out of alignment labeled them atheists although it was not accurate. They did believe in a god just a very different concept.

They also called them cannibals due to their beliefs about eating the body of Christ and drinking his blood. My favorite is that they were considered an anti-family cult (considering how they have packaged themselves as having a family values monopoly today) because they encouraged love and loyalty to Christ over family obligation and duty.

  • huh?

  • Because they didn't bow to the emperor or worship the Gods of Rome.

    God bless!

  • They weren't.
