I'm under 18 in MA, but my job still takes taxes out of my check? You filled out a W-4 when you started your job. At the end of the year, you will get a W-2 either handed to you or in the mail. I would give it to your parents, because they can claim you on their tax return, and will need that, because it's reported as income.
One thing you can do is change your W-4 so you are having Single and 9 deductions taken. The government doesn't look at that form, only your employer does. It gives you more immediate money. However, it may mess up your parents taxes, as they may end up having to pay more. And if you don't have enough taken out of your paycheck each pay period, the government will sometimes penalize you for it. So talk it over with your parents.
You'll only get a refund if more tax was withheld that your tax liability. On your Federal return, if your income as a dependent is over $5,450 then you will have some tax liability and won't get it all back. MA starts taxing you at a lower level so the threshold there will be lower.
The FICA and Medicare taxes withheld are not refundable. Everyone has to pay those.
You could possibly get a refund when you file your taxes.
It has to do with that funny law Pres. Kennedy pushed thru.
regards,
Texian (where there is no income tax)
If you did not make enough earnings you will get back your federal withholdings and your state withholdings. You will not get back your Fica and Medicare.
They will take taxes out based upon how you filled out your W-4.
